Sylvester Manor Educational Farm is currently looking for full-season and part-season 2012 farm crew who are enthusiastic about farming, food, and the arts, especially music. Crew members will get the opportunity to work in and learn about all aspects of our operation, including planting, crop care, harvesting, and sale of vegetables to our expanding CSA, farmstand, and farmers’ markets.

Blue Highway Concert – Bluegrass at its Best

Award-winning bluegrass band “Blue Highway” will perform on Shelter Island on Saturday, January 14, 7:30 pm. This high-level national act has been wowing crowds since 1994 and features some of America’s most talented pickers and singers.

The original concert was to be at Sylvester Manor last summer, but Hurricane Irene postponed the show.

This time we’ll try the concert in the Shelter Island School auditorium, and nothing will get in the way of an evening of toe-tapping songs and tunes. Bluegrass enthusiasts will enjoy seeing one of the country’s top acts at the top of their game, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

Proceeds from the concert will benefit Sylvester Manor Educational Farm.

Seasons greetings to all of our friends and supporters!

Here are three ways you can make Sylvester Manor a joyful part of your holiday season:

1. Share holiday cheer at Tea & Tree

When: Saturday, December 17, 2 to 4 pm

Where: The Manor House, 80 North Ferry Road

Why: This celebration, a revival of the popular Fiske family event, is the Sylvester Manor staff’s way of saying “Thank You” to the members of our new non-profit and to our volunteers. Not a member yet? Not a problem — sign up for a 2012 membership at Tea & Tree (minimum donation $50) or donate online now (Select “Donate” above).

2. Help us meet our matching grant challenge

Sylvester Manor owner Eben Fiske Ostby will match all donations received in 2011 up to $250,000 and the same for the next three years for a total $1 million match. We’ve raised over $185,000 in gifts and grants thus far — you can help us make the most of this match and raise an additional $65,000 before the end of 2011.

Tea & Tree

December 17, 2-4 pm

Sylvester Manor Educational Farm invites all supporters and volunteers to celebrate the holiday season at the Manor House.

All members — from Lima Bean to Founding Families — as well as our loyal volunteers are invited. And anyone new to Sylvester Manor can sign up to be a member for 2012 at Tea & Tree or online (select “Donate” from the menu at the top of this website).

Come for traditional music, cookies, eggnog and good cheer.

We hope to make this an annual event. Each year we will put a cherished item from the Manor collection on display along with its story.

Plant & Sing performer, Anais Mitchell

Here is part of Anais Mitchell‘s performance at Plant & Sing in the beautiful October sunshine! Have a look at this video.

The reference points of her music may seem to come from all over the map while still interconnected: the country ballads of the Carter Family, the hard-edged cabaret of Brecht and Weill, the story-songs of Randy Newman, the vast narrative scope of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, and the intricately crafted tales of her namesake, bohemian feminist Anais Nin, to name a few.

Rufus and Martha Wainwright Performance at Plant & Sing

Rufus

It is rare for poetry, melody, rhythm and harmony to dwell comfortably within a single soul. Rufus Wainwright is such a soul. To say that he is an accomplished performer is to understate his talent. Since his early teens he has variously been an actor, composer, songwriter, arranger and instrumentalist. He is equally at home in the pop, alternative, rock, country, and more traditional genres including jazz, classical and opera. He has set Shakespeare sonnets to music, and written an opera; his current catalog includes eight albums and two DVDs, widely recognized for their originality, variety and workmanship. He comes to Shelter Island from recent sold-out performances in New York and Montreal.

Martha

With a hugely expressive voice and powerful songs, Martha is a beguiling performer and a refreshingly different force in music. She started singing with her brother, Rufus, as a duo in the early ’90s. She took a major step in 1998 with her song “Year of the Dragon” in the album “The McGarrigle Hour”. In 2005, she released the eponymous, “Martha Wainwright”, to great critical and commercial acclaim. Martha toured the world last year, promoting her third album, “San Fusils, Ni Souliers A Paris: Martha Wainwright’s Piaf Album”, an homage to Edith Piaf. In 2010 and 2011, she headlined her own outdoor show in London and delighted Australia with sold out shows at Sydney’s Opera House. Meanwhile, she is hard at work on her next studio album and caring for her beautiful 20-month old son.
